Life: review

I walked into Life with no expectations. The best way to describe my thoughts  were ‘meh, this could be okay’.

In the past few years, films such as Gravity, Interstellar, The Martian, Arrival and Passengers, (that’s not even naming all of them), have given audiences visually beautiful films.

But they were also dull, as aside from some story tweaks here and there, didn’t offer anything new. After Gravity, it felt like I was watching the same film over and over.

That’s where Life sets itself apart.

Life is a film that I have seen before, but not for a long time.

However, I welcomed that, because it felt like a remake of my old favourites – Alien

The International Space Station teams finds proof of life on Mars, and when they bring it back on board, it tries to kill them all.

It’s grim, it’s intense, it’s beautifully filmed, and even though it’s a clear rip-off of Ridley Scott’s Alien, it brings enough of it’s own originality to the table to get away with it.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson produced the most memorable performances, and if the film was stronger, they may have seen themselves nominated for an oscar.

Life is better than Interstellar and The Martian, on par with Gravity, depending on your taste, but still nowhere near as good as Alien.

If my expectations were as high as they were when I watched Interstallar, I may have walked out disappointed. Instead, I walked out feeling like I got my money’s worth.

Score: 4/5
