5 Best Burgers in Canberra

It’s no secret that Canberra is a place that does burgers and does burgers well. With more than one place that is dedicated to the humble burger alone (and no, I’m not talking about McDonalds or KFC). So how do you know what burger joint is right for you and your crew? Below is a list of a bunch of burgers around Canberra that make the top 5 best burgers in Canberra based on atmosphere, taste and price.

5. Burger Hero | taste 3.5/5 | price 4/5 | vibe 2.5/5

Burger Hero has to make the list – burgers are literally in their name. This place offers killer burgers but is probably more of a take away joint than a dine in – which is totally fine as there are so many beautiful places in Canberra to take food to and have a picnic. This is especially easy as it is located on Lonsdale Street so there are a heap of places to go within walking distance. The best thing about Burger Hero is that every burger is custom made – they supply a list of available ingredients and then you do the rest so you can’t lose. They have heaps of protein, salad, and dressing options included in the prices and it’s super easy to read. They also have four different kinds of chips on offer so there is something for everyone! Burger hero overall gets a 3.5/5

4. Brodburger | taste 3.5/5 | price 3/5 | vibe 4.5/5

This will be a controversial one as Brodburger is known as a Canberran institution. Why isn’t it on the top of the list? Don’t get be fooled – Brodburger is really good, I just don’t think it is the best burger in town. Brodburger has locations in Manuka and Fyshwick, but the one is Manuka is lovely as you can watch the sun setting over the foreshore. The vibe is really fun, the weather was great and there is usually a full restaurant full of happy people ready for a good meal. One of the newer additions to the menu is The Capital which featured a beef patty, iceberg lettuce, onion, tomato, pickles, relish, homemade mayo, ketchup and a choice of cheddar, swiss or blue cheese. It is undeniably delicious, but a little bit hard to eat because the burgers are so big. Overall it was a really good atmosphere at Brodburger and they get a 3.7/5

3. Sweetbones | taste 4/5 | price 3/5 | vibe 4.5/5

For all the burger loving vegans out there don’t worry you haven’t been forgetten. Sweetbones, Canberra’s resident vegan hub is nestled in Braddon just off Lonsdale Street and gives off really hip cool people vibes. They have on their menu the breakfast burger which has on it featured tofu scramble with lettuce, tomato, onion, Tabasco sauce, ketchup and hummus with our home made smokey coconut bacon on a Turkish roll and it was insane. It doesn’t have a lot of things on it that are your usual burger ingredients but the flavour combination worked so well together and the fact that it is wholly cruelty free makes you feel very good – and full. One of the best things about Sweetbones is their cake cabinet which has a whole range of sweet goodies to finish up a meal. The menu was very reasonably priced for the quality of the meal, mixed with funky fresh atmosphere, Sweetbones scores a sweet 3.8/5.

2. Catch Fish and Chips | taste 4.2/5 | price 3.8/5 | vibe 4.5/5

Catch is Canberra’s newest fish and chips restaurant located smack bang in the middle of Braddon and since it’s opened it has well and truly taken off. Catch offers of course, your standard fish and chip menu as well as yummy fresh looking seafood. Their menu features a good selection of burgers, one of which is the Mariners Burger, which consisted of a milk bun, crumbed fish, Asian slaw and homemade aioli and is a fish burger for people that don’t think they will like a fish burger. The simple yet powerful flavour combinations are what makes Catch number two on this list.  The atmosphere here is very coastal and chill, definitely somewhere you would come with someone, or even a big group for a good meal, cheeky bev and great atmosphere. It shares a fence with Grease Monkey so depending on what your group is feeling to eat, the venues don’t mind mixing the two outdoor areas which is very cool. Overall, it reels in a score of 4.1/5.

1. Grease Monkey | taste 5/5 | price 4/5 | vibe 4/5

Hands down the BEST BURGER IN CANBERRA has to be from Grease Monkey. Located once again in Braddon, right next to Catch Fish and Chips. If a classic diner style, burger-eating experience is what you’re looking for, look no further. The vibe in Grease Monkey is retro dinner cross car garage and for some reason it totally works. Every weekend the restaurant it is always bustling with hungry customers looking for a good meal. The classic Greasy Burger and chips (with extra greasy sauce) is a must try for anyone in Canberra that appreciates a good burger, it lives up to its name in the best possible way. The Greasy burger was exactly what you would expect it to be, milk bun with a beef patty, cheese, pickles, GM relish, greasy sauce, and red onion with a reasonably good ingredient ratio. The restaurant is also fully licensed so you can have a sneaky drink to wash down your meal. Overall Grease Monkey gets a 4.4/5 and the title of best burger in Canberra.
