Legal Aid @ UC

Legal Aid @ UC is a brand new initiative that offers students, staff and members of the local community access to free legal advice on the University of Canberra’s Bruce campus.

UC has partnered with Legal Aid ACT to provide the uni with the new welfare service. Legal Aid Lawyers will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Student Central to provide free confidential legal advice.

Director of Student Life Scott Pearsall says that making legal professionals accessible will ease the burden on students and staff who are dealing with legal issues.

“We know that university students commonly have a number of legal problems, including debt, residential disputes and employment issues,” he said.

“This new service will provide timely and effective help for our students and enhance access to justice.”

The new initiate also holds the potential to allow UC law students to experience hands-on learning experience through internships and clinical programs, while still on campus.

“Work-integrated learning is a valuable educational tool”.

“The University and Legal Aid ACT will work toward providing students with opportunities to gain practical experience while they study,” he said.

ACT Attorney General Gordan Ramsay MLA welcomed the new service, saying it would provide students with legal support when they needed it.

“Starting university is an exciting time in the life of any student,” he said.

“This legal clinic will make sure that students of UC get the support they need at this new and at times challenging stage of their lives”.
