Unpacking the Canberra Wedding Fair

The Australian Institute of Sport was almost unrecognisable on Sunday the 25th of March when it was transformed for the Canberra Wedding Fair, an annual event to showcase what Canberra has to offer for absolutely everything wedding related. The fair had over 50 stalls and exhibitions from local businesses dedicated to making sure your special day is seamless and memorable.

If you were someone who has next to no idea about weddings, it was almost overwhelming witnessing exactly how much goes into one day and the kinds of prices people pay. There were stalls for cakes, invitations, planners, venues, photographers and even beauty and personal training businesses – there was everything you would ever need for a wedding day and more.

The day ran from 10 am to 3 pm, with two fashion shows, styled by Showpony, and offered something for every couple. With a range of different venue, entertainment, food and styling options. If you didn’t find inspiration here, you weren’t trying hard enough.

We spoke with local wedding and event planner for Showpony Events, one of the fairs partners, Claire Hollinworth about what the day was hoping to achieve, as well as current trends and ideas for weddings happening in 2018.

She told us that burgundy and darker, warmer colours are making a comeback this year and people are bringing it back to natural woods and native flora.

“At the moment, Showpony has got things like rose gold cutlery or unique candle holders and vases which we can offer to clients for their big day. It doesn’t have to be about big grand pieces and features, at the moment it’s all about delicate and understated details that make sure the day is timeless – something you can look back on together in 50 years and still be happy with the choices you made.”

Claire attests that the day went really well. “We’re really happy with the turnout today, it’s so nice to see all of our hard work come to fruition as well as seeing people really getting something out of it. We’re all dedicated to making sure that everyone’s big days are exactly as they want and reflect the couples involved, it’s why we do what we do. If we can make the difference between a stressful day or an effortless experience to them, we’ve done our jobs and we’re happy.”
