Westworld Season One Wrap Up

One of HBO’s most anticipated and talked about shows returned to screens on Monday the 23rd of April, giving fans satisfaction after a 15 month long hiatus.

Westworld returned for its second season after wrapping up the epic ten episode first season in late 2016, leaving viewers waiting for the aftermath of the final episode’s cliffhanger in which we start to understand more about how the multiple story-lines are intertwined.

But more importantly, this is what you need to know to get up to speed with Westworld, whether it’s been a while since you watched season one or are joining the series for the first time…

Based around the 1973 cult classic film of the same name which was created by Michael Crichton and starred Yul Brynner, Westworld hit the small screens in October 2016. With Jonathan Nolan (The Dark Knight, Interstellar) and his wife Lisa Joy as creators, the first episode reached just under 2 million viewers on HBO while the season finale was the peak of the series, hitting 2.24 million screens.

For those who haven’t seen it, Westworld is a theme park for the rich where they go back to the Wild West, being given a realistic experience by the animatronic “hosts” of Sweetwater. The hosts’ narratives, which they use to provide visitors with an authentic trip, cross over but reset at the end of each day or when welcoming new guests.

The main protagonists in the park are Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood), a host who soon starts to realise that she isn’t real, and Teddy (James Marsden), another host in love with Dolores and slowly discovering his past narratives. Fellow Sweetwater resident Maeve (Thandie Newton), the town’s madam, becomes haunted by the memory of a past narrative, eventually being something of a Trojan horse in the season finale.

Anthony Hopkins stars as the park’s creator and director, quickly being caught up in his own web of mistakes which leads to him being killed by Dolores in the season finale. Jimmi Simpson portrays William; a first-time visitor who is dragged along by his brother-in-law, showing his kind heart multiple times throughout the narrative. It is later revealed that the Man in Black (Ed Harris); a sadistic visitor that causes harm to hosts is an older version of William who is looking for the centre of the maze.

Season one ends with Dolores killing Ford as the Man in Black watches on, realising the hosts are now capable of harming and killing visitors, changing Westworld forever. Maeve is able to break back in to the real world, exposing plans for Shogun World, an oriental based park which will be a key focus of the second season.

With the first episode shown in Australia at the same time as the US, local viewers were able to tune in on the 23rd of April to see if any of the many unanswered questions were revealed straight off the bat.
