Poland

By Pat Woods

Team: Poland

Nickname: Bialo-Czerwoni (The White and Reds) or Orły (Eagles)

World Cup appearances: 7 (third in 1974, 1982)

World ranking: 8

Coach: Adam Nawalka

Captain: Robert Lewandowski

Player to watch: Robert Lewandowski
Poland’s captain is also the team’s star goal scorer. The Bayern Munich striker scored 16 goals in 10 appearances during World Cup qualification to claim the title of top scorer in European qualification. Lewandowski has played 93 games for Poland since debuting in 2008 without ever playing in a World Cup match, so expect him to start strong and collect a few goals in the group stage.

NowUC predictor:
Poland topped Group E during European qualification, losing only one game to World Cup-bound Denmark. Now up against tougher opponents in Colombia and Senegal, Poland will have to maintain their winning form to reach the round-of-16. This group could come down to goal difference to decide who progresses, so coach Adam Nawalka will be aiming for a big win against Japan to help Poland go through.
