Are You Aware of Canberra’s Hidden Asphalt Gems?

Voted as one of the best cities to live in the world by Lonely Planet, Canberra is a thriving little city where there is always something going on whether that be the Multicultural Festival, Enlighten or even Floriade. But one thing that we use everyday but take little notice of it is one of the unique features of Canberra, it’s roads.

The Nations Capital hosts some of the best roads in the country within some of the most affluent suburbs that showcases its uniqueness. Autumn is a time where the landscape is changing with the leaves changing colour and falling, frost and dew lay on top of the grass each morning and the temperature starts to drop.

This provides an opportunity to capture some of Canberra’s “Hidden Gems”. Off the main roads and into the back streets there is an abundance of beauty every turn you make with some of the best featured below.

Torres Street, Red Hill

Hands down this is a truely majestic street. I was shocked to the core when I found Torres Street at the base of Red Hill. Tucked away from the main road of Mugga Way and Flinders Way, Torres Street is host to some extravagant real estate, including some diplomatic residences. The street itself has these trees that bend over till halfway of the road on both sides blocking out the Sun however still creating a mesmerising pathway. Privacy is high with hedges and gates from all houses blocking any view into the houses. If there is any street a Canberran should live in, it has to be this one.

National Circuit, Forrest

Leaves stacked to the curb a couple of feet thick whilst still falling from the trees made National Circuit feel most welcome on this list. Its long swooping corner feels like it goes on forever but you don’t want to stop. Located a couple of streets back from Parliament House, National Circuit hosts a clean environment where old brick houses are the norm. The road is smooth the entire way and has these short stumped trees that branch across the bitumen bearing their leafless arms. The glare from the sun poking through the branches created a glow to further awaken the driver if the awe of National Circuit already hadn’t.

Norman Street, Deakin

Close to Deakin and Yarralumla Shops, Norman Street is one that really stands out from the crowd with it’s views of Telstra Tower and Black Mountain like no other street in the area. A tight downhill hairpin corner opens up the road and the first thing that comes to sight is the Tower. Its followed by the abundance of colours from the trees, leaves and lawns of the residences. A few streets back from the main Strickland Crescent, it provides a quiet, family friendly feel to the area with attraction written all over it.

Howitt Street, Kingston

Just a short stroll from the Kingston Foreshore and Kingston Shops, Howitt Street is about 200 metres long and runs off the main roads through Kingston. It is home to several apartment buildings and parking is not allowed on the road which makes it more special. As far as the eye can see, the endless blissfulness of autumn is in full show making Howitt Street a must on this list. It’s quiet, cosy and beautiful but only a few blocks away from the Foreshore. Facing east to west, residents will be able to capture both the sunset and sunrise making it ever more of an impressive street to have in the Capital.

As you can see, Canberra plays home to many “Hidden Gems” that we sometimes never take close notice of. We use roads every day but some just really stick out from the crowd. Canberra possesses many attractions but none of them are to compare with what some have outside their front door (or gate for the residents of Torres Street).
