Canberra’s Best Secret Vegan Eats

Sometimes it can be overwhelmingly difficult as a vegan to go out for a nice meal with friends or family. You don’t want to always feel like ‘the difficult one’ only being able to go to certain venues and only being able to eat particular things. Luckily, more and more cafes and restaurants around Canberra are becoming vegan-friendly, we just haven’t heard about it. Here is a list of some local restaurants, that you perhaps wouldn’t have guessed, serving some of the quietly hottest new age vegetables in town.

  1. Morks

Morks is a restaurant on the Kingston Foreshore that takes old school Thai recipes and adds their own modern twist. They are very popular, having received a Chef’s Hat for 2019, and were one of the first places to offer a ‘secret vegan menu’. They even offer a vegan banquet. So, if all your friends and family are enjoying a carnivorous banquet that’s no dramas, yours will just be substituted with creative and vegan-friendly dishes. Don’t go past the roasted crispy eggplant with rhubarb and sweet soy or the tofu panang curry.

18/19 Eastlake Parade, Kingston.

  1. The Fish Shack

The Fish Shack in Garema Place has been a long standing icon in Canberra’s city centre. Its unique hut shaped design isn’t the only thing intriguing about it. The now somewhat confusingly named Fish Shack has gone completely plant-based in its dishes. When you go to order the fish and chips, or the chicken schnitzel, you are actually getting plant-based fake meat. There are ‘real’ meat options available, but only if you ask, so the unwitting customer is actually helping save the planet whilst being none the wiser. This burger looks pretty convincing to me.

107/85 Petrie Plaza, Canberra.

  1. Ricardo’s

Ricardo’s at Jamison Plaza has been a favourite for Canberra ‘Northsiders’ for many years now and has been widely known for being a very ‘grammable’ breakfast spot. Offering decadent breakfasts that normally involve a lot of sugar and cream and other naughties, they have started taking a different approach to their menu. Not only have more savoury items started slipping in but they now have an entirely separate vegan menu. Vegans rejoice in this avocado toast taken to the next level.

In today’s day and age of people becoming more environmentally friendly and aware of the damages that meat production has on mother earth as well as our own bodies. People with dietary requirements should be celebrated and not shunned. Our vegan friends generally are considered to be the ones ‘missing out’, with not as many options available to them, but times are a’changin. With all these colourful and inventive creations on offer for vegans, They might have the right idea.

Anyway, I guess the secret’s out, go and start taste testing!
