Listening to First Nations Voices Podcast · Podcast 1 Samia

The Listening to First Nations Voices podcast was created by non-Indigenous University of Canberra students Samantha Budakoski, Maddy Piggott, Kitchan Pon, and Lex Roach. The idea for this podcast came from Associate Professor Samia Goudie who is passionate about Indigenous people and culture and is attempting to expand people’s knowledge on the subject and start a conversation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. This podcast was developed to educate people on Indigenous ways of being, doing and knowing, and to inspire awareness and a deeper understanding and appreciation of the richness Aboriginal people bring to Australia.

The Creators:

Samantha Budakoski: I am a non-Indigenous student from Queanbeyan and I am in my third and final year of a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies at the University of Canberra. I chose to be a part of this podcast because I wanted to learn more about Indigenous people, history and culture as I have noticed that there is a lack of knowledge about this in Australia. I think this podcast could help to expand that knowledge.

Maddy Piggott: I am a non-indigenous student born in Perth and now living in Canberra on Ngunnawal land. I am in my fourth year of a double Bachelor of Film Production and Graphic Design. I wanted to be a part of this podcast because I had never worked on a podcast before and wanted to try the new medium. I also didn’t know a lot about Indigenous culture and wanted to use the opportunity to learn more.

Kitchan Pon: I am a non-Indigenous student born in Canberra, I am currently in my second last year of a Bachelor of Journalism at the University of Canberra. I decided to choose this podcast because I believe it’s a great way to learn about ingenious culture and history in a way which is available to people with busy lives. It gave me an opportunity to further improve my interviewing skills and interview interesting people.

Lex Roach: I am a non-Indigenous person studying at the University of Canberra, in my final year of a Bachelor of Graphic Design. I chose to be a part of this podcast as it would give me a chance to hone my audio editing skills while learning more about First Nations peoples experiences, culture and history.

Samia’s interview:

Associate Professor Samia Goudie from the University of Canberra talked about where she’s from, NAIDOC week, and what inspired her to start the Listening to First Nations Voices podcast.
