Mini Golf: One of Canberra’s Cures for a Day of Boredom

Mini Golf. We all know about it, we’ve all probably participated in a round or two. But is it your first thought when you are struck by the looming threat of boredom? Unlikely. Is it the first activity that comes to mind to get you out having fun? Probably not. Little did you know that Canberra provides a beautiful range of mini golf courses to help cure your boredom. So, grab a couple of friends, and give these places a go!

Yarralumla Play Station

Opening Hours: 8:30am-4:30pm (Mon-Fri). 8:00am-5:30pm (Sat-Sun)
Hole Count: 18 or 36 holes (dependent on whether you play one or both of the offered courses)
Estimated Time to Complete: 40 minutes – 1 hour 10 minutes (dependent on no. of courses played)
Ideal Group Number: 2 – 6 people
Fun Level: 4 / 5

The Yarralumla Play Station mini golf course is an outdoor extravaganza, containing a few Canberra-themed obstacles and interactive decorations. Upon arrival, you are immediately faced with a fate-deciding choice, “Am I a novice, or a pro?” This option is perfect for those friends that love a bit of good-natured competition, or maybe for those who are just looking for a bit of fun.

Throughout the course, you are faced with many familiar Canberran monuments, including the Australian War Memorial, Telstra Tower, Lake Burley Griffin, Parliament House, and the Canberra Stadium. The Play Station also utilises up-cycled materials, including bike and car tyres, pieces of wood from surrounding trees and even half of a Lexus IS200 (which first provided a new engine to their beloved miniature train “Bluebell“).

This course provides a mixture of easy and difficult holes, which can be dependent on the decision between novice and pro, or just simply a wrong putt can make everything go askew. On a warm or cloudy day, this course is a perfect way to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. With offerings of old train carriages to sit in, a small cafe for snacks and drinks, and potential picnic spots for those who need a well-deserved break between courses, the Play Station’s mini golf course is sure to provide you with a nice day out to cure your boredom.

Mini Golf Federation SquareΒ

Opening Hours: 10:00am-5:00pm (Mon-Sun)
Hole Count: 18 holes
Estimated Time to Complete: 30 minutes
Ideal Group Number: 2 – 4 people
Fun Level: 3.5 / 5

Mini Golf Federation Square is a relatively new course, located right next to the Federation Square bird aviary, and decorated with plenty of small planter boxes and blooming flowers. This course is perfect for those looking for an easy-going, calm and non-competitive afternoon activity.

The course provides very simplistic obstacles, including hills, bumps, twists and road-blocks. However, some of these may be deceptive in their simplicity. Should you hit the ball at the wrong angle, or not hard enough, you may find yourself in a sticky situation. This course provides an opportunity for beginners or pros to have a fair go and gives a lovely simplistic version of mini golf. Taking mini golf back to its roots, if you will.

The atmosphere at this course is very calm, with light music and the chirping of birds chiming in the background. Throughout the course there is opportunity to (literally) stop and smell the flowers or take a break on one of the provided bench seats. This outdoor course provides a lovely afternoon out, should the weather provide the opportunity.
