Finally! after figured out your skin type, you can now begin on the five essential skincare steps that you need to follow!

1. Cleanse

Cleansing the skin removes oil, sweat, dirt and other pollutants that your skin naturally accumulates throughout the day. That’s why double cleansing is important before applying other skincare products.

Step 1: you can use an oil-based cleanser (apply with your clean hands) or micellar water (use a cotton pad) to wipe off makeup and oil buildup.

Step 2: with clean hands, involves a good old-fashioned lathering cleanser and water. Use a gentle and pH-balanced cleanser in the morning and night to keep your face and pores clean of any dirt.

Please avoid cleansers that contain fragrance or perfume. Despite their appealing aromas, you are actually damaging your skin under the pretence of luxury

2. Tone

After you cleanse your skin of impurities, toner can help to remove any residue left behind by the cleanser, as well as any makeup or oils that might have been missed. This additional cleansing effect can help prepare your skin to absorb your other skincare products, such as serums, essences, moisturizers, sunscreens and minimise the appearance of pores.

You need to apply toner right after you cleansed your skin while it is still a bit damp. The best way to apply toner is with a cottoned or cotton ball, simply soaking the toner’s pads and gently wiping upwards.

Most experts advise against using harsh alcohol or citrus-based toners as they can irritate your skin. Finding a toner that works for you might take a few attempts, so don’t be afraid to try a few different types to see what works for you.

3. Exfoliate

Exfoliation is a crucial step if you are struggling with acne, blackheads or breakouts as it removes the build-up of dead skin cells and helps keep your skin clear.

It is best to exfoliate after toning and before moisturising. You should really only be exfoliating once or twice a week, but this also depends on your skin  type and how it reacts to exfoliation. Remember, find what works best for your skin, which besides you need to know exactly what your skin type, you also required to read through all of the ingredients in your exfoliate products, this helps  you to find what best exfoliate by your skin type.

There are chemical exfoliators and granule exfoliators. Both are effective tools for removing dead skin cells, but chemical exfoliants are often more effective in getting deep into your pores and removing buildup.

If you struggle with blackheads, acne or sun damage, opt for chemical exfoliators that contain Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) and Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) over your traditional granule scrub. For acne and blackhead plagued skin, look for an exfoliator containing BHA as it penetrates deeply into your pores.

4. Moisturise

Moisturizing provides a protective layer to the skin that locks in moisture and keeps skin hydrated. This hydration is what gives your skin a smooth, luminous appearance. You do not want to skip this step!

It would be best if you chose a moisturiser that works for your skin type — this can be a cream, lotion, gel or oil. You need to gently rub it into your skin in an upward motion, being careful not to tug on the delicate skin around your eyes. Once the moisturiser is applied, give it a minute to sink in, ensuring you receive its full benefits.

5. Sun Protection (SPF)

Living in Australia, where the UV levels are usually high, it is important to incorporate SPF into your day to day routine. The sun is the most damaging factor for the skin and the leading cause of skin cancer. Using a moisturiser containing SPF or applying sunscreen after your moisturiser is key to maintaining a youthful and healthy visage.

Apply SPF of at least 15 to your face for the daytime, using a higher SPF if you anticipate heavy sun exposure throughout the day. Be sure to re-apply every few hours as it wears off.
