Brunch Spots Off The Beaten Track in South Canberra
As the weather gets colder, there’s nothing like a cup of hot coffee or a heart warming brunch with your friends or family to get you through. Cafes in Kingston, Civic and Braddon spring to mind in this humble pursuit. Unfortunately, these same cafes are always packed with people with the same idea.
Seemingly known only to those who live south of the lake, there are some hidden gems for those who don’t want to journey across Canberra for their smashed avo.
Based on the atmosphere, service, menu options and quality of coffee, here are three of the best brunch spots in South Canberra, just off the beaten track.
Fox and Bow – 4 Farrer Pl, Farrer ACT 2607 | Vibe: 4/5 | Food: 4/5 | Service: 4/5 | Coffee: 4/5
On the edge of South Canberra there’s a small cafe called Fox and Bow hidden at Farrer shops. Surrounded by graffiti, the cafe gives off the cool, hipster vibes associated with Braddon and Kingston without being in the middle of the city. This cafe has a large range of food to choose from, including fresh ingredients and as well as a various amount of sides. If the smell of avocado, bacon and eggs doesn’t grab you, the smell of freshly baked pastries will.
Outside, blankets cover the chairs ready for the cooler mornings but when the sun comes out the glass doors open, giving the cafe a open feel while music plays in the background.
While it is a little on the expensive side, Fox and Bow has good quality food, a cool atmosphere and good coffee, but the best thing is the all day brunch menu.
Common Grounds Gowrie – 4/1 Jeffries St, Gowrie ACT 2904 | Vibe: 3/5 | Food: 4/5 | Service: 3/5 | Coffee: 4/5
Common Grounds Gowrie is almost always busy, but when you come taste the good food, you will understand why. Another cafe hidden among local shops, this one offers table service, amazing coffee and delicious food for a reasonable price.
Common Grounds Gowrie is a cafe you can visit regularly, with a welcoming homely feel as soon as you step into the door. The cafe itself is small and cosy, but also offers two outdoors areas if you are looking for a breathe of fresh air.
The menu has a good range of options for breakfast, including smoothies made with fresh fruit or good value for money meals which means you can add extras without feeling guilty.
Krack’d Peppa – 1 Isabella Dr, Gilmore ACT 2905 | Vibe: 4/5 | Food: 4/5 | Service: 5/5 | Coffee: 3/5
Close to Rose Cottage, Krack’d Peppa is a pub style brunch spot known for their live music and $12 meals on Wednesday nights. Located in a small farm house, this cafe does the classic breakfast.
The interior is rustic and creates a laid back vibe, while providing something for the little ones with an exciting playground, making this cafe family friendly as well.
For those living or visiting the Southside who want a different place to try for brunch, Krack’d Peppa is worth a shot. With friendly table service, good coffee, an array of good food and a fire place for cooler days, its a good place to catch up with those you love.
