Six tips for enjoying Skyfire

A post shared by Rachel Colombo (@rachelcolombo_) on

Skyfire is a night-time fireworks event run by Hit104.7 radio held annually over Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra. Known as one of Canberra’s annual highlight events, Skyfire can be challenging for even the veteran to navigate. Here are six very important tips for planning your Skyfire experience.

  1. Plan your toilet breaks

There are only three official toilet blocks placed for people to use during Skyfire, and they’re all on the north side of Lake Burley Griffin. Fireworks start at 8:30pm, and it is virtually impossible to move anywhere around the lake after 6pm. If you aren’t placed nearby before this, say hello to your new friend: a conveniently placed copse of trees and bushes.

  1. Plan your parking/don’t park after 6pm

Your best bet to get safely to and from Skyfire is the public buses that leave from every major interchange, especially if you want to drink. If you really want to drive there yourself, make sure you arrive before 6pm – otherwise be ready to hike a few kilometres to get anywhere near the lakefront.

  1. Bring blankets and pillows to sit on

Your poor tush might be sore sitting for hours on the grass or pavement, so make sure to bring a picnic blanket and a few pillows to sit on. If it’s wet, you’re going to really want that tarp down.

  1. Take a portable radio

I’ve been to Skyfire for years, and yet nearly every time I forget to bring a portable radio. Skyfire itself is themed to a custom medley of music, and while it’s still beautiful to behold without the background music, it’s much better to understand the patterns before you.

  1. Bring a portable battery for your phone

This should be a must-have for any event you might take photos at, but somehow, I always forget and end up miss taking photos of the event itself. Your phone can also function as a radio if you forget yours!

  1. Pack a wet-weather plan

This ties in with bring a tarp or picnic blanket to sit on – make sure you have a wet-weather plan. Rain jackets and ponchos can keep you warm and cozy while you enjoy the atmosphere and fireworks, but sitting sadly in the rain is fun for no one.
