Surviving the Canberra Climate

A recent survey has Canberra placed at number two most liveable city in Australia, but once again, it has been the climate that has brought the nation’s capital down.

It is Canberra’s winter that has been given the worst rap. Icy winds off the snowy mountains, below zero nights and a lack of warmth in the sun are all aspects that Canberrans complain of.

These icy are easy to deal with. A warm thick jacket, with a collar to turn up, investment in some quality scarves, and woolly socks all allow for protection from these weather aspects.

At night, in gives the excuse to snuggle under layers of blankets, or cuddle up to your loved one.

All these make winter bearable, even enjoyable. What makes it a wonderland is the close proximity that Canberra enjoys to the Australian ski fields (Close to Thredbo and Perisher).

Then the temperature changes around, just as the body acclimatises to the cold, summer hits, and the temperature soars to above 30’s.

Luckily, Canberra is also in close proximity to the beaches of the South Coast.

Another key solution to surviving the summer is the use of backyard above ground pools. Inflatable ones are cheap, and it is easy enough to set up, have the TV facing the said pool, and watch Australia’s favourite summer sport, the cricket.

Let’s not forget the Australian barbecue that those barmy summer evenings provide the perfect weather for.

Canberra is known for its poor weather. But if measures are taken, this weather is easily enjoyed. But if the Canberra Climate becomes too much, take a trip just a couple of hours down the road to the snow or the beach.

Canberrans are lucky to be able to have both nearby.
