Bloom – A fun, boppy second-round effort from Rufus

Released earlier this year as the second full studio album of Australian electronic three-piece Rufus, Bloom is a casual journey through the realms of light kicks and tasty synths that don’t disrupt the dance floor rhythm.

As an album, Bloom effortlessly flows through its tracks rather than abruptly changing between styles. It opens to the sounds of nature, a gentle crooning that draws you in from the first bar before a gradually increasing in tempo and waltzing into a gentle four-on-the-floor pace.

In track number two, Like An Animal, vocals from lead singer Tyrone Lindqvist reach out from the opening bar with gentle pads before being picked up by darker synths and driven it into the chorus.

It gets hard during the middle of the album to not bop around a bit, to not get out off your seat and move around while using the energy the music gives you. However, this album is made for early morning dance floor just as much as it is studying or a long winding road, much like the direction the group took previous album Atlas down.

Be With You, Daylight and Hypnotised all energise the listener, particularly if you are sitting around just typing up a review. The foot tapping mucks with your typing and can occasionally leave you writing the lyrics instead, but draws you into the fun, almost happy mood of the album.

The Sydney trio will embark on the Australian Leg of a World Tour come the end of April, and despite a lack of shows in the capital, a number of NSW dates could appeal to territorians.

For me this album is a 4/5 stars. Can be bought from any major digital or physical music retailer, or streamed on Spotify.
