Killjoys – Season 1: Review

Killjoys is bounty hunters in space, with a definite Firefly vibe—if Firefly was produced by MTV—but it won’t fill the Joss Whedon size hole in your binge-watching heart.

Dutch, raised as an assassin; John Jaqobis, tech-head and former thief; and his brother, D’avin Jaqobis, a former soldier, make up our team—unless you count the artificial intelligence, Lucy, that resides inside the ship.

Season one of Killjoys feels like an introduction to the world, using a ‘warrant of the week’ style for the first few episodes, where each week they play out another mission as Killjoys. But as the show goes on, every plot point they’ve found through their missions comes to a head in the final episode.

Despite the mission of the week beginning, Killjoys is a very character driven show. With the team’s leader, Dutch—along with her extensive backstory—stuck in the middle of a much larger conspiracy which impacts the characters more and more as the episodes go along.

The first ten episodes of Killjoys hint at a long-running story with many surprises to come, and whilst the show may have been weak in some areas, it’s hooked me enough to want more. It has the potential to make a dent in the TV science-fiction genre, but to do so, it will have to up its game in season two and get us caring even more about Dutch, John, and D’avin.
