Review: Santa Clarita Diet

If the thought of watching Drew Barrymore eat a grown man’s detached foot makes you sick to the stomach, then the new Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet is not for you. Barrymore stars as Sheila, an undead, sex-crazed real estate agent in the gruesome black comedy.

After an extreme bout of vomiting, Sheila’s husband and real estate partner Joel (Timothy Olyphant) walks into the bathroom of an open home to find her on the ground without a pulse. She quickly wakes up and from that point on, her behaviour and mannerisms change.

The series stars Olivia Hewson, a young actress from Canberra who plays Abby, the daughter of Sheila and Joel. Things become tricky for Sheila and her family after her thirst for human flesh sets in and arouse suspicions from Dan (Ricardo Chavira), the Police officer next door.

The show often leaves you shocked by the level of graphic body parts and bodily fluids that are contained in just one episode. Once you get past this, the comedic elements of trying to raise a normal teenager while figuring out ways to eat people without being caught are ultimately hilarious.

One of the greatest moments of the series is when Sheila and Joel attempt to find a cure for her condition. In order to complete the recipe for the cure, they must source the bile of a pure Serbian. It’s safe to say that this dark comedy is refreshing and original – a completely different concept to any other show around.

I would recommend watching Santa Clarita Diet to anyone who can withstand a bit of gore and the excretion of bodily fluids, as they will thoroughly appreciate the humour, wit and hilarity of the series. Currently, there is only one season with 10 episodes available on Netflix with the producers leaving room for more.
