Who is our new Bachelor for 2018 and why do we care?

Earlier this month, Network Ten announced that the new hunk for Australia’s 2018 The Bachelor is none other than former-Wallabies star, Nick “Honey Badger” Cummins himself. But wait, who even is this guy that thinks he can just captivate our hearts and make us drool?

Known to most of us simply as the rugby union player sporting a modern twist on the 80’s mullet, Cummins was born along the sunny shores of Port Macquarie, NSW and moved to Sydney in 2006 to save the Randwick rugby club later that year in their grand-final. Cummins went on to represent Australia internationally in both the Australian Seven’s team and the Wallabies, temporarily moving to Japan in 2014, probably in search of less bogan sheilas.

When ya catch dinner for the tribe, ya gotta celebrate… in ur fart filters. @australia

Aside from his wealth and fame, what makes Cummins such an attractive candidate?

Well, he’s one of eight kids, so we already know he’s pretty good at handling lots of unwanted attention, and is well practiced at internally groaning “go awaaay” without showing it. Between a sporty lifestyle and his apparent love of the beach, he’s certainly some A-Grade eye-candy, which is an un-offical prerequisite to be a Bachelor on our TV screens.

At 30, he’s also within the perfect age bracket to enchant women (and blokes, sorry) young and old; audience and contestants alike. We know from previous years that a larger age-gap is ideal, as we look at one of the last times this show broke hearts, ending with Richie Strahan (31) pairing off with Alex Nation (24) back in season 4 in 2016 instead of fan-favourite, Nikki Gogan. Of course, cradle-snatching relationships like this seldom last, and our least favourite couple eventually broke up.

Like any good season of The Bachelor AU there are rumours that Cummins has previously dated one of the contestants, a Miss Cassandra Woods, much like Matty J and Laura Byrne, and Sophie Monk and Stu Laundy. So she’s already in pretty good stead to become a front-runner, right down to the fact that she, like Snezana Markoski and Alex Nation, is a single parent, and we all know how that turned out.

Although he usually plays wing in rugby, in the dating world Cummins is no wing-man; unless you count for himself. In 2010, while living in Perth, WA he met and woo-ed Norwegian commerce student and semi-professional artist, Martine Thomassen with his sick ukulele skills.

Although they broke up in 2016, the pair remain close, and while that would be a deal breaker for some girls, as long as Cummins finds someone with a low self-esteem and/or no problems with an open relationship he should be fine.

TenPlay doesn’t actually want to tell us yet when the first episode of season 6 will air, but based on previous years we have to assume this Aussie blonde will grace our screens somewhere between mid-and-late July.

We can only wish the best of luck to the poor bloke, but then again, maybe he likes bikinied-melodrama.
