Top 10 fantasy novels to replace Game of Thrones

Thanks to HBO, George R R Martin’s fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire has spread like wildfire around the world in the form of the immensely popular TV show named after the first book, Game of Thrones. However, A Song of Ice and Fire is hardly the only exemplary work to fantasy fiction, nor is it the greatest as the thousands of characters often leave the readers confused and uncertain about what’s happening in the books. It also doesn’t help that it takes George ages to release a book. Here are a list of my favourite fantasy novels that are equal to or trump Game of Thrones:

10. The Liveship Traders: If you are a fan of Daenerys’s attempt to reclaim her birthright, The Live Ship Traders trilogy is for you especially if you like pirates. Written by Robin Hobb

9. The Aeons Gate series: The Aeons Gate series is a great story if you enjoy grisly deaths in a fantasy setting. Written by Sam Sykes.

8. The Demon Cycle: Human lives are under assault by demons in the story. It is a very interesting story especially if you like bad-arse characters. Written by Peter V. Brett

7. The Riftwar saga: One of the most famous fantasy series in the world. The Rift war saga describes a great world filled with fun characters along with magic, monsters and dragons. Oh the Dragons. Written by Raymond E. Feist

6. The various Shannara series but specifically the Voyage of the Jerle Shannara trilogy: A very good series with an amazing setting, and the three books that make up the Voyage of the Jerle Shannara is in my opinion the best. Admittedly not for everyone but it would make an epic TV series. Written by Terry Brooks

5.The Bitterbynde Trilogy: I can’t believe I put this on the list. It is one of my favorite novel series but I absolutely can’t stand the fact that it is. An excellent story for hitting you in the feels and then ripping apart your very soul. Written by Cecilia Dart Thornton

4. The Gentlemen Bastards series: SO MUCH INTRIGUE. If you absolutely love the under the table dagger dealing that permeates Game of Thrones, you’d love the loveable liars of the Gentlemen Bastards. Endorsed By George R R Martin himself. Written By Scott Lynch

3. The Night Angel Trilogy: The main Characters are loveable, the antagonists are truly scum. The Night Angel Trilogy is a great series filled with grisly deaths and intrigue. A true roller coaster ride of emotions, it has everything Game of Thrones has and so much more, plus you can remember the major characters. Written by Brent Weeks

2. The Stormlight Archive: Many worlds where fantasy storys are set are resonably similar to our own. The world of Game of Thrones  is no exception. The world of the Stormlight Archives is not one of these worlds. Its creatures, characters and setting are very foreign. It is a great story and you will come to care deeply for some characters, although like Game of Thrones there are many of them. Written by Brandon Sanderson

1. The Witcher/The Hexer/ Wiedźmin: Arguably even greater than Game of Thrones, this Polish series is so famous and well read when President Obama visited the country he was given several of the novels. The Witcher and its titular character Geralt of Rivia is a truly great story and has spawned a film and TV series as well. It has also done the one thing Game of Thrones has not yet managed to accomplish: several excellent video games based on the series. Written by Andrzej Sapkowski.
