How to Survive Skyfire

Skyfire, the evening fireworks event is held every year on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra. Every year crowds upon crowds of families and teenagers congregate around the lake. This is the 25th year Skyfire has wowed Canberra and it’s visitors. Below are a few helpful hints if you were planning on attending the display or were just a Skyfire novice.

  1. Try to avoid driving at all costs. If you have not arrived by 6pm you will not get a car park (without parking illegally of course) within a kilometer of the lake.
  2. Take a radio to tune into 104.7, a picnic blanket, scrumptious snacks and beverages and a poncho in case of rain.
  3. The fireworks display starts from 8:30pm. If you plan on getting down to the shores any later than 7:30pm you will be hard pressed to find a patch of grass to claim and will definitely not find a car park.
  4. If you get sick of your friends or hanging out with the family head down to the main Regatta Point stage to enjoy the free concert. It starts at 6pm.
  5. DO NOT PARK ILLEGALLY. Rangers have informed organisers that they will be out in force and will show no mercy. If you have to drive, try and avoid wearing platform stilettos, as you will have to walk.
  6. Have fun with your fellow Canberrans and family and friends. Drink, eat, soak up the happy atmosphere and watch the incredible firelights display.
