and The Forgotten Garden, Kate Morton pens a story of mysteries, secrets and intrigue. The Secret Keeper shifts between the midst of World War II, the 1960s and present day and weaves together the stories of several characters. The story revolves around a crime one of them witnesses as a teenager who sets out, fifty years later to uncover the truth.

The beginning of the book is quite confusing as the story shifts between different times and within people’s thoughts but, once you establish an understanding of the characters, the story is riveting. A snippet of the ending of the story is given away at the start of the novel as a teaser and it keeps you guessing all the way through. The characters’ lives are developed gradually throughout the novel, with clues dropped along the way, which is at times both captivating and very frustrating.

Eventually the puzzles pieces fit together and it’s revealed how all the characters are intertwined. The best part of the book is of course the ending when your curiosity is finally satisfied but, even on the final pages when you think you have it all figured out, there are more unexpected revelations in store.

Morton has created a fabulous mystery novel, set in war torn London which was under the constant threat of being bombed during World War II. This event changed the world and plays a central role in the meeting of the main characters and also how it still affects them later in life. Through Morton’s work you come to appreciate the past and the way it helps to define the future.
