“The Intern” is the debut novel of journalist Gabrielle Tozer. It follows Josie Browning, a journalism student with a stellar academic record and on the way to becoming a hard hitting newspaper journalist.  But when the only internship she can get is at fashion magazine Sash, she has to step out of her comfort zone and into a new world.

The book was enjoyable, accessible and made for an easy reading experience.  Josie made for a really relatable and likable protagonist; she was smart, funny, clumsy and down to earth. It was great following her around the departments of Sash, learning the ins and outs of the magazine industry and finding out that it is far from easy.

Although the book was a little predictable in terms of storyline, it was reminiscent of “The Devil Wears Prada” for teens but with more heart and honesty; dealing with more than just fashion and glamour. Such as, issues with body image and family. The book contains a lot of positive vibes for the reader.  The romance was fun, cute and didn’t take too much away from the story which was good.

Overall “The Intern” is a nice coming of age story set behind the scenes of the glamour and sparkle of the magazine industry.  I recommend this book for people who enjoy the Young Adult genre and want a fresh funny read.

“The Intern” is out now. To find out more about Gabrielle Tozer visit her website.
