AFL Anzac Game in Canberra

In what was a first for Canberra hosting an ANZAC day clash between Greater Western Sydney Giants and the Gold Coast Suns the biggest threat to the attendance was the cold and wet conditions that swept into the Nations Capital during the day.

This clearly had an effect on the crowd which was one of the lowest ever seen at Manuka Oval with only 6917 turning up to the clash between the competitions newest clubs. Those who stayed home missed out on an impressive showing with the GWS Giants running out 66 point winners – a record breaking margin for the club.

In a game that had controversy surrounding it following its announcement back in August, with the low attendance it once again may be called into question whether it was the correct decision made by the ACT Government to allow the Giants to have the ANZAC day game at the expense of the Brumbies.
