Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland – Review

The Rise of Thadland, based on the American comedy series Blue Mountain State, successfully breaks down the barricade between hit television show and motion picture. Featuring a large majority of original cast members and an amusing plot with references to the original series, fans of Blue Mountain State can have no complaints with the film they’ve been demanding.

For those unaware of the original series, Blue Mountain State follows the misadventures of the Blue Mountain State Universities football team, “The Mountain Goats”. It exposes a number of stereotypical features of American university life such as, sex, drugs, and partying. The series centered around Quarterback Alex Moran, and Linebacker Thad Castle, so it was no surprise to see the movie follow suite.

The movie itself is themed around Alex Moran’s attempt to save the football team’s infamous, party central, clubhouse “The Goathouse”, after the Dean of Blue Mountain State decides to sell it. With no alternative, Moran approaches former BMS teammate and number one pick in the NFL draft, Thad Castle for financial help. Castle agrees to buy the Goathouse on one condition, Moran organises Castles ultimate fantasy of a party. And thus Thadland is born.

Thadland is a party filled with thousands of university students, drugs, alcohol, and even fairground rides that soon get out of hand and it’s left to Moran and Castle to save the Goathouse for good.

The montage style scene of Thadland was by far my personal favourite part of the movie. Not only did it set the tone for the rest of the movie and give you a sense of just how massive the party was, it is reminiscent of the majority of university student’s party fantasy.

Sub stories that don’t really add anything to the overall plot of the film and the predictable story-line are the only two negatives identifiable in the movie. With that being said, the plot was easy to follow and as someone who had watched the television series, I had no problem identifying characters, their sub stories, and references to the series itself.

There’s no denying that the movie is strictly for viewers of the television series. To put it simply, the movie feels like an episode from this series, only this time round on a much larger scale which is exactly what the producers should have been aiming for. If you enjoyed the television series there is no doubt that you will enjoy the movie.

Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland is simply a jacked up version of the television series intended to be viewed by fans of the Blue Mountain State franchise. It certainly wont win any Academy Awards, however it does give the original series audience the send off they have been demanding.
