Adele Live in Sydney
On March 10, British pop-ballad sensation Adele cemented her place in the hearts of Sydneysiders, when she performed to a 90,000-strong crow at ANZ Stadium. Despite a slightly delayed start, the singer went on to spend three hours performing, wowing fans with a selection of songs and her tremendous voice.
Adele’s performance began in dramatic form, with the singer appearing on stage to the first booming strains of Hello, a clad in her signature red floor-length Zuhair Murad gown, which features a stunning 10,000 Swarovski crystals. The number-one hit single elicited more than a few heartfelt tears from listeners. As the most popular song on her most recent album 25, Hello set the scene for what proved to be an amazing show.
After leading with a strong introductory set, Adele proceeded to lead the crowd through a riot of emotions – laughter at her foul-mouthed commentary and mid-show antics (which included a fall down a set of stairs and t-shirt gun) and a real feeling of personal connection, formed not only through her songs but also through the shared stories of her life and family.
Her relationship with the crowd was only strengthened when she stopped the show, sounding almost in tears, to check on a fan who was being assisted by paramedics. Despite her quite obvious distress, Adele sang with an unsurpassed talent, before disappearing for a few minutes, leaving the crowd to be entertained with a fan-favourite, the Kiss-Cam.
As Adele Live is her first Australian tour, Adele’s chosen set-list ensured fans got to hear all their favourites, including some of her decade-old works. Chasing Pavements, Skyfall, and Set Fire to the Rain all proved to be total show stoppers. The show finished on a high with Somebody Like You. The Grammy award-winning single, and Adele’s final exit through the crowds proved to be just the send-off needed to set fans into a happy daze, despite the horrors of Sydney transport awaiting them outside the Stadium.
