Wet Dreamz – Song Review

Ever told a girl you were a freak in the sheets but you were actually a virgin? Then Wet Dreamz is the song for you.

Rap or hip-hop may not be your usual taste in music, but with its cute and relatable storyline Wet Dreamz is a song anyone will enjoy.

The song is the third track featured on Grammy-nominated rapper J. Cole’s newest album ‘2014 Forest Hills Drive’. The album was released on 9th December 2014, and was certified platinum on 31st March 2015.

J. Cole raps a reflection on how nervous he was to get with a girl for the first time during his schooling years.

“I ain’t never did this before, no”, the hook informs the listener. Of course, he doesn’t tell his crush that he is a virgin.

J. Cole’s ‘dear diary’ style of song, along with descriptive lyrics take the listener through a journey which surely many guys have experienced in school themselves.

However, behind the storyline there may be a hidden message which J. Cole is trying to unveil. The song could be seen as symbolic to his rise of fame in the rap industry. Playing it cool and acting confident toward the rap music industry and society itself, yet nervous internally that his music won’t be impressive enough. This could be displayed in the song lyric “I’m hoping that my sh*t is big enough to f*ck with”.

As soon as J. Cole is about to get it on with the girl described in the song, she stops him and confesses she is a virgin. “I wanna get something off my mental, I can tell that you’re a pro, but baby be gentle, cause…” This lyric could also be seen as symbolic to his fame, as J. Cole realises that the rap industry was in fact not ready for his unique songs which differ from other famous rappers.

Rap is not what I normally listen to, but I personally enjoy the song and believe it has more meaning than some of the other songs on the album.

I rate Wet Dreamz  3.5 out of 5
