Parties At The Shops

Every youngen’

talks of going to a party where everyone from the neighbourhood is invited. Well, Canberra’s local suburbs hosted exactly that on it’s birthday.

Everyone knew of the big bash on the eve of Canberra’s birthday, but it was the #PartiesAtTheShops that really showcased Canberra’s subcultures.

I couldn’t resist but to rock up to one. I had missed my local shops party, but noticed O’Connor was hosting theirs until later.

Upon arrival, I had discovered two contrasting bands playing – one jazz and one metal. The party also hosted much more entertainment over the course of the night including a circus act and pedal powered (by the audience) short local films to name a few.

The crowd and entertainment alike depicted O’Connor’s home context; the older Canberran suburb being a home to young ‘indies’ and ‘hipsters’.

Going from the big birthday celebration of the 11^th March at Lake Burley Griffin, it was refreshing to see Canberra’s local ’burbs showing off their own flare.
