We’ve been messing with Rocky for a while now.

Two years have now fallen since Live Love A$AP. And I thought all we had there was another tripped out druggy from Harlem with French braids that could spit a few words over a standard beat. 3 words exactly. Long Live A$AP.

This A$AP stuff is a complete breath of fresh air; game changing stuff if you will. I rarely listen to an album from top to bottom more than 2-3 times. You move on, it’s just like a movie I guess. It’s time consuming. However, Long Live A$AP plays would be heading into the 10s and 20s. So now you understand how excited I have been for this release – yet alone, his latest tour of Australia announcement.

So. upon first listens, NO it’s not as swaggy as Live Love A$AP, but his progression is evident. Apart from maybe two tracks, it is a very professional record where he stuck heavily to his roots, which is so important when rappers make the mixtape-album transition. There are tons of feature artists, but A$AP still did it in a way that didn’t jeopardise his opportunity to further prove his solo artistry – besides there’s still nine Rocky-only tracks.

Now he’s coming to Australia to run amuck for the first time this June. Triple j radio has hopped on the bandwagon giving album features Santigold and Skrillex another reason to be talked about from tracks Hell and Wild For The Night. But nobody still knows his greatest songs, a few of which lie within Long Live A$AP. #clamscasinoforradio!

Anyway, I am just revelling that we have gotten to hear LEGIT creative and controlled A$AP music, rather than fake major label material. I still want more though! Promoters have now had to change the dates and venues for the tour after an “immense reaction” to pre-sale tickets. There’s your invitation. Go spend a night out with this character!

Song analysis

  • Long Live ASAP – about Rocky coming to fame and hopefully lasting for a long time
  • Goldie – about Rocky now rich in money and can spend it anyway he wants notably smoking weed and hiring hookers.
  • PMW & LVL – sexual experiences, reminding everyone he’s the “king” in the sack.
  • Hell ft. Santigold – Follow Rocky and you’ll be fine
  • F*&$in’ Problems – loves “bad bitches”, having sex is a problem which means he’s the problem. Bring your girls around for A$AP and friends. Drake, Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz all bragging about their money and power
  • Wild for the Night – Skrillex

production. Common theme of bragging about money, being wealthy, threesomes, shots of liquor. “Wild for the night, f@#k being polite I’m going…” chorus

  • 1 Train – second favourite track on album. Massive collaboration of accomplished rappers including the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Big K.R.I.T., Joey Bada$$, and Action Bronson. Lord Flacko has the opening verse with the Hit Boy produced beat that could be rapped over for half an hour it’s that good.
  • Fashion Killa – A$AP paints a picture of his ideal woman and what he wants her to wear in terms of fashion and jewellery brands.
  • Suddenly – Sudden changes that happened to him due to his quick rise to fame.
  • Phoenix – asking people to judge him yourself. Doesn’t trust anyone he grew up with – no disrespect to them though. Deals with Rocky asking questions about his life and the attention he is receiving. He’s finally taken control of his future.
    • Probably my favourite song
